PayPal launches Facebook app for sending money
Ever wanted to send a friend or family member some cash for their birthday or other special event? PayPal just made doing that easier by launching a new Facebook application designed to let you send money right from the social networking site.
The new application, called Send Money, allows you to create a greeting card to accompanying the money transfer. The e-card contains a message, photos and videos to mark occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, special events and more.
“In a world that’s turning increasingly to social media, we are giving our customers the flexibility to send their money to whoever they want, whenever they want and for whatever ‘occasion’ they want,” wrote JB Coutinho, a senior product marketing manager at PayPal, in a blog post on Thursday.
The e-cards are posted on the recipients’ Facebook Wall, but the message is kept private. Senders can also use the service to just send someone money, without posting an e-card to their Wall. PayPal estimates that nearly 80 percent of active PayPal users also actively use Facebook.
By launching Send Money, PayPal solidifies the growing link between social media and e-commerce, in which the social graph is being used for a variety of shopping related activities, such as product recommendations from friends and special-offer targeting by merchants. This is also a strong indication that F-Commerce will continue to grow as more providers see potential in Facebook as a platform for business.
